Visiting Vrångö for the First Time? Here Are the Answers to Our Most Frequently Asked Questions!

How do you get to Vrångö? Are there restaurants on the island? Can you cook your own meals? And is the Gothenburg archipelago really worth visiting in winter?

Here at Kajkanten Vrångö, we receive plenty of questions from both future guests and curious visitors. So, we’ve gathered the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our beautiful little island and our family-run accommodation by the sea.

Whether you’re planning a day trip, a romantic weekend getaway or a few peaceful days away from everyday life, we hope this guide will help you discover Vrångö, one of the southernmost inhabited islands in the Gothenburg archipelago.

1. How do you get to Vrångö, and where can you buy ferry tickets?

Vrångö is located in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago, on Sweden’s beautiful west coast. The island is car-free, so the easiest way to get here is by passenger ferry from Saltholmen.

The journey from central Gothenburg to Vrångö takes approximately one hour by public transport, depending on connections.

You can buy your ticket using the Västtrafik To Go app. Vrångö is located in fare zone A, which means you can travel all the way from central Gothenburg using the same zone ticket.

Tickets can also be purchased from the crew on board the ferry, but please note that only card payments are accepted.

And the ferry journey itself? We think it’s a wonderful way to begin your island adventure!

2. How many people live on Vrångö, and is the island really car-free?

Yes, Vrångö really is car-free!
The island has approximately 380 permanent residents and is home to a small but lively local community.

Getting around on foot is part of the charm. Distances are relatively short, life moves at a gentler pace, and the sea is almost always just around the corner.

Despite its small size, Vrångö has a grocery store, restaurants, swimming spots, beautiful walking trails and a guest harbour.

And while the island is a popular summer destination, it’s very much a living community throughout the year.

3. How long are the walking and hiking trails on Vrångö?

Vrångö is a wonderful place to explore on foot, whatever the season.

Several marked walking trails lead through woodland, across rocky landscapes and along the beautiful coastline.

•Tärnstigen:
Approximately 1.8 km. An accessible walking trail, suitable for visitors who prefer a less challenging route.

•Northern Trail (Norra slingan):
Approximately 2.5 – 3 km. A slightly more rugged route through the northern part of the island.

•Southern Trail (Södra slingan):
Approximately 2 km. A lovely walk offering beautiful coastal scenery and views of the archipelago.

If you combine the trails into one longer walk, the complete route is approximately 8 kilometres.

From Kajkanten, you can easily reach Tärnstigen by following the path past our floating sauna raft and continuing towards the nature reserve.

Our advice? Allow yourself a little extra time. There are plenty of places where you’ll want to stop, admire the view and simply enjoy being there.

4. Can you cook your own meals when staying at Kajkanten Vrångö?

Absolutely!
All our boathouse apartments at Kajkanten Vrångö have their own small kitchen, making them ideal for self-catering holidays.

Each apartment is equipped with an induction hob, a fridge with a small freezer compartment, a microwave and the essential kitchen utensils you’ll need to prepare and serve simple meals.

You can enjoy breakfast whenever you like, prepare a cosy dinner together or warm up something delicious after a long walk.

There’s also a grocery store on the island where you can pick up food and other essentials.

We believe that having your own kitchen is one of the best things about staying with us. It gives you the freedom to plan your days exactly as you wish, without having to depend on restaurant opening hours.

5. Are there restaurants on Vrångö?

Yes! There are several places to enjoy food on Vrångö, although opening hours and availability vary depending on the season.

Hamnkrogen Lotsen is located approximately 100 metres from Kajkanten, right by the guest harbour. During its opening hours, you can enjoy lunch, dinner or something refreshing to drink.

Kajkanten also works closely with Lotsen, allowing our guests to pre-order delicious food delivered directly to their boathouse apartments.

Options include breakfast, seafood platters, shrimp sandwiches, fish and chips and other tasty treats.

Near the ferry terminal, you’ll find Ternan Restaurant and Ice Cream Café, and during summer, additional seasonal food stalls and pop-up restaurants often appear around the island.

Kajkanten doesn’t have its own restaurant, but thanks to our partnership with Lotsen and the self-catering facilities in every apartment, you have plenty of flexibility when it comes to meals.

We recommend checking restaurant opening hours before your visit, especially during autumn and winter.

6. Can you rent a floating sauna on Vrångö?

Yes, you certainly can!
At Kajkanten, we have our very own floating relaxation raft, complete with a sauna and a hot tub, right by the sea.

The raft can be booked for private use, subject to availability. When you book a private session, the entire raft is reserved exclusively for you and your group.

We normally offer three booking sessions:
•Morning: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
•Afternoon: 1:00 PM–5:00 PM
•Evening: From 6:00 PM onwards

You don’t have to stay at Kajkanten to book the raft, although our overnight guests enjoy a discounted rate.

Imagine relaxing in a warm sauna or hot tub while looking out across the sea. It’s just as magical on a peaceful summer morning as it is on a crisp November evening.

You can find current prices and booking information on our website.

7. Can you rent kayaks on Vrångö?

Yes! Kajkanten offers kayak rentals, subject to availability and suitable weather and sea conditions.

The southern Gothenburg archipelago is a beautiful area to explore by kayak, with countless islands, rocky islets and sheltered stretches of water.

When renting a kayak from us, you’ll receive basic instructions, a nautical chart, suggested routes and the necessary equipment, including a life jacket, spray deck and paddle.

We’re happy to offer advice based on the weather conditions and your previous paddling experience.

Safety always comes first, and particularly during the colder months, wind conditions and low water temperatures may limit opportunities for kayaking.

Rental periods and prices are available on our website.

8. Can you visit Vrångö and stay at Kajkanten all year round?

Absolutely! Kajkanten Vrångö is open every day, all year round.

Although many people associate the Swedish archipelago with sunshine, swimming and summer holidays, we believe the other seasons are just as special.

Autumn is perfect for peaceful walks along quiet trails, enjoying fresh seafood and returning to a warm, cosy boathouse after a day outdoors.

Winter brings tranquillity, crisp sea air, beautiful coastal scenery and the opportunity to combine a refreshing cold-water dip with a relaxing sauna session.

Spring is when the island slowly comes back to life, with longer evenings, birdsong and nature beginning to bloom.

And summer? Well, that’s when Vrångö is every bit as wonderful as you’d imagine!

At Kajkanten, you’ll stay in modern, self-catering boathouse apartments right by the waterfront, with the sea as your closest neighbour.

Vrångö is an island for every season. And you’re just as welcome here in February as you are in July.
