Vrångö

The coziest island on the Swedish west coast can be found at the far end of Gothenburg's southern archipelago.

Car-free Vrångö is something very special, the genuine archipelago atmosphere in the harbor with the white boathouses and fishing boats brings to mind another time. Here you can feel the beat of history, the calm, the silence and the shifts of the sea. Vrångö has previously distinguished itself as the island of fishermen and pilots, today people go to Vrångö for the beautiful nature, the best seafood and the fine beaches. The settlement stretches like a belt across the island and both north and south of the settlement are nature reserves. Through the reserve you will find hiking trails that take you through thickets, past beaches and up to viewpoints with breathtaking views of the archipelago.

The Pilot Lookout

The pilot service played a crucial role on Vrångö, with the profession often passed down through generations. In the 1930s, the pilots relocated from Vrångö to Vinga. As a reminder of this history, the small red house at the Pilot Lookout still stands—a true symbol of Vrångö. Climb the stairs and watch the sunset from here—the view is unbeatable.

The Beaches of Vrångö

Vrångö is known as Göteborg’s best island for swimming. There are several beaches and bathing spots to choose from, and if you dare to venture beyond the main walking trails, you’ll likely find your own secluded bay or sun-warmed rock to relax on.

Hiking Trails

The landscape is a mix of Halland’s sandy beaches and Bohuslän’s rocky shores. Along the coastline, you’ll find rare and unusual plant species such as wild asparagus, goldenrod, and sea holly. Vrångö offers 8 km of easily accessible hiking trails through its nature reserves.

Vrångö’s village

Vrångö has a year-round population of 400 residents, but thanks to its permanent summer guests, the number of inhabitants triples during the summer. On sunny days, thousands of visitors also arrive for day trips from Gothenburg. During this time, Vrångö’s guest harbor fills up with recreational boats.

Restaurants & Shop

On Vrångö, you’ll find two restaurants: Hamnkrogen Lotsen and the summer restaurant Ternan. Lotsen also runs a fish shop, proudly offering the finest seafood in the archipelago. In the harbor, there’s a year-round grocery store that, despite its small size, stocks just about everything you might need.
