Håkan woke up with a jolt in the middle of the night. It was pitch black in the room and he quickly pulled the covers up to his nose and looked around the room anxiously. He didn’t like being awake alone in the middle of the night when everything was dark. What had even woken him up? He held his breath and pulled his feet and hands ever so slowly under the covers in the bed, just in case there were monsters under the bed waiting for a juicy Håkan foot to sink their teeth into. He shuddered at the thought. Both his mother and his father had firmly told him that there were no monsters, and for many years they had had a well-rehearsed routine of systematically going through wardrobes, cupboards and looking under the bed before Håkan went to bed. For a few years now, he himself was the one who looked for monsters before bed, but if anyone asked, he would never admit it.
But now it was the middle of the night and something had woken him up and he did NOT like it. He pulled the teddy bear closer to him and focused on breathing calmly and still. He squinted and counted reindeer jumping over sacks of Christmas presents in the night sky. When he finally fell asleep again, he had strange dreams. He dreamed that he was flying, high above Vrångö in a sleigh. It was Christmas, but Håkan could see and feel that there was no Christmas spirit left. Behind every house knot stood tired fathers, changing into, what was it, Santa clothes? He could hear mothers cheerfully shouting “come on kids, look in the window who’s coming!” and saw children running expectantly to the window to see out into the darkness who it was that was coming. But also children who didn’t seem to care at all. Children who sat with their mobile phones and would rather watch YouTube than look for Santa. In the dream, it was as if the world lost its color.
Under Håkan’s bed, a small figure lay still, so still. He thought back and forth and decided it was time to take action. Otherwise, this Christmas could be in serious jeopardy.
Poor Håkan, he doesn’t even get to rest in his soft, comfortable bed! And speaking of beds and sleeping well – you know that when you book a whole week with us, we always offer the seventh night?
