Window 13 - December 13th

The Lucia morning on Vrångö could have been peaceful and full of atmosphere, but inside Kajkanten, chaos reigned. Evelina and Madeleine stood glaring at each other from opposite sides of the room.

“I’ve been Lucia three years in a row,” Evelina said, stamping her foot.

“Yes, but I look best in the crown,” Madeleine retorted defiantly.

Håkan held up his hands. “Hey, let’s not forget that I can be Lucia too!”

The room fell completely silent. Evelina and Madeleine stared at Håkan as if he had just suggested taking over all of Vrångö.

“You?” Evelina said slowly.

“Yes, why not?” Håkan said, spreading his arms. “I look pretty good in white.”

Behind a pile of fish crates in the shadows, Berske and Krut watched the drama unfold. Krut chewed intensely on an old rope, as if it were the most exciting thing he had ever tasted.

“This is ridiculous,” muttered Berske. “Lucia is about light and joy, not about who gets to stand at the front waving a candle.”

“Can’t we just let everyone be Lucia?” suggested Krut, with the rope hanging from his mouth. “Or throw glitter on them until they stop arguing?”

Berske gave him a tired look. “No. This requires finesse.”

With a snap of his tiny fingers, Berske transformed the Lucia crown. When the girls and Håkan saw it again, it had split into three parts. Håkan could wear the crown itself, while Evelina and Madeleine each held a candlestick.

“That’s genius!” Håkan exclaimed, spreading his arms wide.

Evelina and Madeleine exchanged hesitant glances, but eventually, they nodded. “Alright then,” Evelina said. “But only if I don’t have to be Santa.”

When the Lucia procession finally began, Evelina had donned a star boy’s hat, while Madeleine had chosen to be a Christmas elf. However, Berske didn’t seem entirely pleased with her red costume.
“What kind of outfit is that?” he muttered to himself. “That red lump isn’t even a real Santa. Just a… commercial imitation.”

Krut giggled. “Ho-ho-ho man, right? He likes glitter, so we’re probably on the same team.”

“Absolutely not!” Berske hissed, fixing the pig with a sharp stare.

As the procession moved through Kajkanten, there was still a magical feeling in the air. Håkan, in his role as Lucia, had never felt prouder. Evelina and Madeleine looked satisfied, although Madeleine had to adjust her crooked Santa hat several times.

And on the floor at Kajkanten, there lay a barely noticeable trace of glitter – a small, sparkling proof that magic had been with them.
