When H\u00e5kan opened his eyes the next morning, he was no longer the doubting man from yesterday. No, today, he was something entirely different. A hero. A hero on a mission to save Christmas. He felt a childish determination swell in his chest and leapt athletically out of bed. His feet landed squarely in his reindeer slippers, and he wiggled his toes happily. It was almost as if he draped an imaginary cape over his shoulders. He stretched, felt the wind in his hair \u2013 despite the window being closed \u2013 and envisioned himself taking on the greatest task Vr\u00e5ng\u00f6 had ever seen. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to save Christmas, pig!\u201d H\u00e5kan declared loudly to himself, punching his fist into his palm for emphasis.<\/em><\/p>\n

The pig, who had been snoozing at the foot of the bed, raised an eyebrow \u2013 if pigs even have eyebrows \u2013 and nodded enthusiastically.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we! Save Christmas, we! Yes, wait, we were\u2026 uh, we were on our way to find that\u2026 you know\u2026 that Santa, the one who does\u2026 yeah, that thing\u2026 we\u2019re going to find Santa and get him to make Christmas\u2026 make it good, we will! Krut and H\u00e5kan!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

H\u00e5kan took a deep breath, feeling the strange sense of being on the verge of something big.<\/em><\/p>\n

Krut looked at him with his big, bewildered eyes. \u201cWe fix, we say\u2026 now we must go,\u201d he said and started marching forward with determined steps, as if he\u2019d been on his way before H\u00e5kan even knew what they were doing. <\/em><\/p>\n

Out the door they went, with Krut leading like a talking weather vane, and H\u00e5kan struggled to keep up. \u201cWait, don\u2019t walk so fast!\u201d H\u00e5kan complained. \u201cI\u2019m getting tired!\u201d
Krut came to a sudden stop, so abrupt that H\u00e5kan accidentally nudged him in the rump.
\u201cOuch! Watch where you\u2019re going, you clumsy oaf!\u201d squeaked Krut, but his mood quickly improved as he pulled out a basket of gingerbread cookies from seemingly nowhere. \u201cHere, have a gingerbread cookie. Take two! Gingerbread is br\u2026 gingerbread and glitter, we like! The magic is in the cookies. And the glitter! Glitter in the corners, glitter in the world, we love glitter.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need Berske,\u201d Krut announced suddenly, as if even he was surprised to say it. \u201cHe knows, he sees! And he likes\u2026 people happy. Even if he doesn\u2019t always like to show it.\u201d Krut giggled to himself and nervously scratched behind his ear with a hoof, almost tripping over a loose stone. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s Berske?\u201d H\u00e5kan asked, unsure if he\u2019d heard correctly. He wasn\u2019t entirely convinced he could handle more strange companions just now. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGnome,\u201d Krut replied quickly. \u201cAn elf. Hardly ever seen. Lots of duties, lots of work. But he likes Christmas\u2026 sometimes.\u201d Krut gestured with his hooves, as if trying to describe something big and important. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSo, he lives here? In the barn?\u201d H\u00e5kan asked, beginning to understand why they were heading there.<\/em><\/p>\n

Krut nodded eagerly. \u201cHe\u2019s always been here. And we\u2019re going there because we need him, yes!\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

H\u00e5kan felt a bit nervous. An elf? A house gnome? For him, Santa had always been a large, jolly man with red, soft clothes. Pulled by reindeer and with a sleigh full of presents. Weren\u2019t gnomes known to be a bit\u2026 grumpy? He shuddered but threw his imaginary cape over his shoulders again and placed his hands on his hips. Who was he to back down now? Christmas needed saving, and he was the right man for the job! <\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, hooray, could it actually be a good Christmas after all? It seems like Krut has a plan, at least. Are you starting to get curious about who this H\u00e5kan really is?
